COLLECTIVE BEHAVIOR
Les Sentinelles is a French term for sentries, those who act as the eyes and ears at the boundary of a territory. The project begins by looking at Pohang as a place where many different actors and signals are constantly present and by bringing these elements into the work through real-time interaction.
In his recent works, Jung Seung has been developing what he calls “digital life forms.” With Les Sentinelles, his attention moves toward what happens when several autonomous entities occupy the same space. The project takes inspiration from swarm systems found in bees and ants, where relatively simple individual actions can produce complex collective behavior. The installation consists of fifteen mobile robots and a media wall projected across the front wall and floor. Their movements are connected to real-time data related to the Pohang region.
During his research on Pohang, Jung searched for information that could offer a view of the region beyond familiar human-centered narratives. Data produced by machines and measuring systems became an important part of the project: accelerator operation data, local wildlife, space development, satellites, environmental changes, and other signals that are often outside everyday perception. These materials return in the installation as images, movement, and robotic behavior.
The fifteen robots move freely through the exhibition space and begin to interact when they detect visitors. One robot is connected to speech recognition and generative AI, allowing it to engage visitors in conversations related to the themes of the project. Each robot carries a keyword associated with a particular element of the region. When two robots collide, their keywords form a new combination. This combination is transmitted wirelessly to a server and influences the images generated on the media wall.
The media wall consists of six chapters projected across the wall and floor. Each chapter has its own subject, while its images continue to change through real-time online data and keyword combinations generated by the moving robots. The visual environment does not repeat as a fixed sequence. It changes throughout the exhibition according to the relationships among robots, visitors, and external data.
